The T23 Medium Tank was an experimental U.S. prototype developed during World War II as a potential successor to the M4 Sherman. It featured cast armor, a 76mm gun, and was notable for using an electric transmission, which allowed for smoother operation and eliminated the need for a traditional gearbox. The T23 had a low silhouette, good mobility, and better firepower than earlier U.S. medium tanks.
While it performed well in testing and over 200 units were produced, the T23 was never deployed in combat due to concerns over its electric drive's maintenance complexity in field conditions. However, its turret design was adopted for the M4A1(76)W Sherman and later contributed to the development of the M26 Pershing, making it a key step in the evolution of American armored warfare.
