The M24 Chaffee was a light tank developed by the United States during World War II to replace the aging M5 Stuart. Introduced in late 1944, it featured a 75mm main gun, a significant upgrade over the Stuart’s 37mm, and was mounted in a lightweight, fully rotating turret. Designed for reconnaissance and support roles, the Chaffee combined speed, improved firepower, and better armor while maintaining good mobility.
The M24 first saw combat with U.S. forces in Europe during the Battle of the Bulge, and later in the Pacific Theater. Though lightly armored compared to medium tanks, its low profile and agility made it effective in fast-moving operations. The Chaffee’s balanced performance ensured it remained in U.S. and allied service well into the Cold War, seeing action in conflicts such as the Korean War.
