The Soviet BT-4 (twin-turret tank) was an experimental variant of the BT “fast tank” series, developed in the early 1930s as the Red Army explored multi-turreted designs. Inspired by similar concepts used on the T-26 and interwar foreign tanks, the BT-4 prototype mounted two small turrets, each armed with a 7.62mm DT machine gun, instead of a single main gun. Armour protection was very light, around 6–13mm, enough only to stop small arms fire, while mobility remained the tank’s strongest asset thanks to its powerful M-5 Liberty petrol engine, capable of propelling it to speeds over 70 km/h (43 mph) on roads. The dual-turret layout was intended to give wider arcs of fire for engaging infantry, but in practice it complicated crew operations and weakened overall firepower compared to a single-turret design with a larger gun. As a result, only a few prototypes were built, and the project was quickly abandoned in favour of more practical single-turret BT designs like the BT-5. While short-lived, the BT-4 reflected the Soviet Union’s early experimentation with multi-turret tanks, a concept ultimately proven inefficient in modern mechanised warfare.
