The Japanese HQ Team in World War II typically represented the command element of an infantry company or battalion within the Imperial Japanese Army. Led by an officer (usually a lieutenant or captain) and supported by NCOs, runners, and signal personnel, the HQ team was responsible for directing attacks, coordinating defensive positions, and maintaining communication with higher command. Equipment often included field maps, signal flags, field telephones, and radios (where available), though Japanese units frequently relied on runners due to limited radio availability.

In combat, HQ teams were often positioned slightly behind the front line but could quickly become involved in close fighting, particularly in jungle or urban environments where command posts were difficult to secure. Japanese command doctrine emphasised aggressive leadership from the front, and officers were expected to personally inspire and lead their men, sometimes even participating directly in assaults. As the war progressed and supply shortages worsened, HQ elements often operated under extreme logistical constraints, yet they remained central to coordinating the stubborn defensive actions that characterised Japanese operations in 1944–45.
