The Australian Infantry Team in North Africa formed the backbone of the 2nd Australian Imperial Force (AIF) during campaigns in Libya, Egypt, and Tunisia between 1940 and 1943. Typically organised around a section of 9–10 soldiers, these teams were armed with Lee-Enfield rifles, a Bren light machine gun, grenades, and occasionally submachine guns for section leaders. Well-trained and highly disciplined, Australian infantry gained a reputation for toughness, initiative, and aggressive patrolling, often operating in harsh desert conditions far from established supply lines.

Australian infantry played a key role in major actions such as the Siege of Tobruk, El Alamein, and the fighting around Bardia and Tobruk, where they faced both Italian and German forces. Adapted to desert warfare, they conducted raids, defended fortified positions, and launched determined assaults against enemy strongpoints. Their resilience under constant artillery fire, air attacks, and extreme environmental conditions earned them a formidable reputation among both allies and opponents, making Australian infantry one of the most respected Allied forces in the North African campaign.
