The German Panzer III Ausf. E Befehlswagen was a command tank variant of the Panzer III, adapted to serve as a mobile headquarters for armoured units in the early years of World War II. Introduced in 1939, it was based on the Panzer III Ausf. E chassis, which featured improved torsion bar suspension and better armour protection than earlier models. To make room for extra radio equipment and map tables, the main 37mm KwK 36 gun was replaced with a dummy gun or, in some cases, a 7.92mm MG34 machine gun for self-defence. The vehicle carried multiple radios, including long-range sets, enabling it to coordinate tank formations effectively. Armour protection was up to 30mm, giving it reasonable survivability for the period, while the Maybach HL 120 TR engine allowed a top speed of 40 km/h (25 mph). The Panzer III E Befehlswagen saw service during the invasion of Poland (1939), the Battle of France (1940), and the early stages of Operation Barbarossa (1941), providing vital battlefield communications for German panzer divisions. However, as larger and more capable command variants based on later Panzer III and Panzer IV chassis were introduced, the early E models were gradually phased out.
