The Soviet SU-76i was a unique self-propelled gun introduced in 1943, created by converting captured German Panzer III and StuG III chassis into Red Army vehicles. Instead of scrapping the captured tanks, Soviet engineers fitted them with a new, fully enclosed fighting compartment armed with the 76.2mm S-1 gun, adapted from the F-34 tank gun used on the T-34. Armour protection was strong, with up to 50mm on the front, and the vehicle retained the German Maybach engine and suspension, giving it reliable mobility. Around 1,200 SU-76i vehicles were produced, and they served in Soviet mechanised and tank units during 1943–44, particularly on the Eastern Front. They were praised for their solid protection and firepower but were difficult to maintain due to shortages of German spare parts. By late 1944, most were withdrawn from frontline service in favour of standardised Soviet designs like the SU-76M. The SU-76i remains one of the most interesting examples of the Red Army’s ability to adapt enemy equipment for its own use.
