The M3 Lee was an American medium tank developed in 1940, designed quickly to field a tank with a 75mm gun before a proper turreted design was ready. It featured a unique layout: a 75mm gun mounted in the hull sponson and a 37mm gun in a rotating turret above, giving it a tall profile and complex silhouette. The tank was crewed by 6–7 men and had decent firepower and armor for its time, but its height and limited gun traverse were major drawbacks in combat.
 
The M3 Lee first saw action with U.S. forces in North Africa and was also widely supplied to British and Soviet forces through Lend-Lease. While it performed adequately against early-war Axis tanks, it was soon outclassed by more modern designs. Despite its flaws, the M3 Lee was a crucial stopgap that helped the Allies maintain armored strength until the M4 Sherman became widely available.
