The Soviet T-20 Armored Tractor “Komsomolets” was a light armoured artillery tractor introduced in 1937, designed to tow small field guns and carry gun crews into battle under protection. It had a fully armoured front cab with space for two crew, while the rear compartment could transport up to six soldiers or artillerymen. Powered by a 50 hp GAZ-M engine, it could reach speeds of around 50 km/h (31 mph) on roads and had modest cross-country capability for its size. Armour protection was light, ranging from 7–10mm, sufficient only against small arms fire, but many were armed with a 7.62mm DT machine gun in the cab for self-defence. The T-20 was widely used in the early years of World War II, towing light guns such as the 45mm anti-tank gun and 76.2mm regimental gun, and it saw action in the Winter War (1939–40) and the German invasion of 1941. Although production ended in 1941 with about 4,400 built, it remained in service through the early war years, often pressed into improvised combat roles. Despite its vulnerabilities, the T-20 was valued for giving Soviet artillery units mobility and limited protection on the battlefield.
