The Soviet SKB-50 Aerosan-02SS was an experimental armoured aerosan developed in 1940–41 for reconnaissance and combat in deep snow. Mounted on skis and powered by an aircraft engine with a rear propeller, it was designed for high mobility across frozen terrain. Unlike standard aerosans, the 02SS was heavily armed, featuring a 23mm MP-6 autocannon in a turret taken from the T-40 light tank, supported by a 7.62mm DT machine gun. Armour was added for crew protection, bringing the vehicle’s weight to over 5 tons, far more than originally planned. During trials it proved too heavy for effective snow travel, often sinking, and lacked key features such as brakes and reverse gear. Costing nearly as much as a light tank, it was deemed impractical and never went into production. Despite its failure, the SKB-50 Aerosan-02SS stands out as one of the most unusual Soviet attempts at combining tank firepower with winter mobility.
