The USA M31 Armored Recovery Vehicle (ARV) was a specialised support vehicle developed from the M3 Lee/Grant medium tank chassis to recover damaged or immobilised tanks from the battlefield. Introduced in 1942, it replaced the main armament with recovery equipment, including a fixed 60,000 lb winch, a crane jib capable of lifting engines and turrets, and stowage for repair tools and spare parts. A dummy 75mm gun and a working .30 cal machine gun were fitted to help disguise its role and provide basic self-defence. Powered by the same Continental R975 radial engine as the M3, it retained a top speed of around 38 km/h (24 mph) and shared the same armour protection, up to 51mm, which allowed it to operate near the front lines. The M31 served with U.S. and Allied forces in North Africa, Italy, and North-West Europe, ensuring that valuable tanks could be repaired or recovered instead of abandoned. Though later replaced by recovery vehicles based on the more numerous M4 Sherman, the M31 ARV was a vital stopgap that played a key role in maintaining Allied armoured strength in the field.
