The Soviet T-60 Light Tank was a small, mass-produced vehicle introduced in 1941 to quickly replace heavy losses of the obsolete T-26 and BT series. Designed as a stopgap measure, it was simple, cheap, and easy to manufacture, with over 6,000 units built during the war. The T-60 was lightly armed with a 20mm TNSh autocannon and a coaxial 7.62mm DT machine gun, giving it limited capability against enemy armour but making it useful against infantry and soft targets. Armour protection ranged from 7–35mm, enough to withstand small arms and shrapnel but vulnerable to most German anti-tank weapons. Powered by a 70 hp GAZ-202 petrol engine, it could reach speeds of around 40 km/h (25 mph), with decent mobility for reconnaissance and infantry support. The T-60 saw action from the Battle of Moscow (1941) onwards, often fighting in desperate defensive battles despite its shortcomings. While quickly outclassed, it played a vital role in keeping Soviet armoured forces operational during the early, critical years of the war. It was eventually replaced by more effective designs like the T-70 and SU-76, but the T-60 remains a key example of Soviet wartime improvisation and mass production.
