The German Panhard P204(f) was a captured French Panhard 178 armoured car pressed into service with the Wehrmacht after the fall of France in 1940. Renamed P204(f) under German designation, it retained its original French design—a 4x4 wheeled armoured car with armour up to 26mm thick and typically armed with a 25mm SA 35 gun and a 7.5mm Reibel machine gun in a fully rotating turret. The Germans made several modifications, including refitting some with German radio equipment, new cupolas, or even replacing the main armament with a 20mm KwK 38 autocannon or 7.5cm Pak 40 anti-tank gun in special conversions. Highly valued for its good mobility and range, the P204(f) was employed by German reconnaissance units, security forces, and police battalions in occupied France, the Balkans, and the Eastern Front. Although production had ceased with the French defeat, captured stocks ensured the vehicle remained in German service well into the war. The P204(f) is a prime example of Germany’s widespread use of captured equipment to supplement its armoured forces.
