The Soviet T-34/76 (1941 Variant) was an early production model of the famous T-34 medium tank, entering service shortly before the German invasion of 1941. At the outbreak of war, only around 900 examples were in frontline units, but as production rapidly increased, the 1941 model became far more common through late 1941 and into 1942. It featured sloped armour up to 45mm thick, giving excellent protection against early German anti-tank weapons, and was armed with a 76.2mm L-11 or F-34 gun, supported by 7.62mm DT machine guns. Powered by a 500 hp V-2 diesel engine, it reached speeds of up to 50 km/h (31 mph), offering outstanding mobility for its time. Although the two-man turret placed a heavy burden on the commander and production quality often varied under wartime pressures, the T-34/76 (1941) still outclassed the Panzer III and early Panzer IV. Its arrival on the battlefield shocked the Wehrmacht and marked the beginning of the T-34’s role as the backbone of the Red Army’s armoured forces.
