The Soviet T-26 (welded hull) Model 1938 was an improved version of the widely used T-26 light tank, introduced as part of a modernization effort in the late 1930s. It featured a new welded hull design, replacing the older riveted construction, which provided greater structural strength and slightly better protection without increasing weight. Armour thickness ranged up to 15mm–20mm, enough to resist small arms fire but vulnerable to anti-tank weapons. The main armament was the 45mm 20-K gun, supported by a 7.62mm DT machine gun, giving it respectable firepower for its class. Powered by a 90 hp GAZ T-26 petrol engine, it had a top speed of around 30 km/h (19 mph), making it more suited for infantry support than fast manoeuvre warfare. The T-26 Model 1938 served in the Spanish Civil War, the Winter War (1939–40) against Finland, and in the early stages of the German invasion in 1941, where it was outclassed by newer German tanks. Despite this, it remained in service in large numbers, and its welded hull design marked an important step toward modern Soviet armoured construction techniques later seen in vehicles like the T-34.
