The Soviet T-40 Amphibious Light Tank was a reconnaissance vehicle introduced in 1940, designed to provide mobility on both land and water. It was armed with a 12.7mm DShK heavy machine gun and a 7.62mm DT machine gun, making it effective against infantry and lightly armoured vehicles but unsuited for tank-to-tank combat. Armour protection was very light, ranging from 6mm to 13mm, intended only to resist small arms fire. Powered by a GAZ-202 6-cylinder petrol engine, the T-40 could reach speeds of 45 km/h (28 mph) on land and 6 km/h (4 mph) in water using a rear-mounted propeller. Though advanced for its time, with features like amphibious capability and torsion bar suspension, it was expensive to produce and poorly armed compared to emerging threats. As a result, production was limited to just over 220 vehicles, and most were lost during the German invasion in 1941, where they were outmatched by heavier armour. Despite its shortcomings, the T-40 was an important step in Soviet light tank design, leading to the development of the more capable T-60 and other wartime reconnaissance vehicles.
