The Soviet T-50 Light Tank was an advanced light tank developed in 1941 as a planned replacement for the ageing T-26. Designed with features similar to the T-34, it had sloped armour up to 37mm thick, excellent crew ergonomics with a three-man turret, and was armed with the 45mm 20-K gun supported by a coaxial 7.62mm DT machine gun. It was powered by a newly developed 300 hp V-4 diesel engine, giving it a top speed of around 44–52 km/h (27–32 mph) and good mobility for a light tank. Intended to serve as the Red Army’s primary infantry support tank, the T-50 was modern and well-protected for its class, but its complex design made it difficult and expensive to mass-produce. Only about 65–75 units were built before production was halted in favour of simpler, cheaper light tanks such as the T-60. The T-50 saw limited combat during the early years of the German-Soviet War, proving effective but far too rare to have any significant impact. Despite its short service life, it represented one of the most advanced light tank designs of the era and directly influenced later Soviet tank development.
