The Sturmgeschütz III Ausf. G (December 1943 variant) with Alkett-applied Zimmerit was the mature, mass-production form of Germany’s ubiquitous assault gun — a low-silhouette, casemate-armoured vehicle mounting the 7.5 cm StuK 40 L/48 gun that gave it strong anti-tank and excellent direct-fire HE capability for infantry support. By late 1943 production runs had incorporated a number of field-driven simplifications and reinforcements (improved gun mounts and routine production tweaks to improve reliability), and many December-built G-models left the factory with side-skirts (Schürzen) or provision for them to better defend against anti-tank rifles and HEAT projectiles.

A distinctive finishing touch on many Alkett-built vehicles was Zimmerit — the anti-magnetic-mine coating trowelled or rolled onto the casemate and hull — applied in the familiar ridged pattern to reduce the risk from enemy magnetic charges. Operationally the Ausf. G continued to excel as a versatile, cheap-to-produce workhorse: effective in direct support of infantry, in defensive anti-tank roles, and as the backbone of mobile Sturmgeschütz units on both the Eastern and Western fronts, though it remained vulnerable to flank attacks, concentrated armour, and air strike when used outside of properly supported formations.
