The German StuG III Ausf. G Arnhem (with Zimmerit) represents one of the most common and battle-hardened variants of the Sturmgeschütz III, widely used during the fighting in Arnhem in September 1944 as part of Operation Market Garden. The Ausf. G, introduced in late 1942, was the final and most numerous version of the StuG series, mounting the 75mm StuK 40 L/48 gun, effective against both enemy armour and fortifications. Armour protection was improved to 80mm on the front, often further enhanced with bolted-on armour plates or concrete layers for extra defence. By 1943–44, these vehicles were fitted with Zimmerit anti-magnetic paste, a distinctive ridged coating applied to prevent Allied infantry from attaching magnetic mines. Vehicles used in Arnhem typically featured late-production modifications, such as a cast Saukopf mantlet for better ballistic protection, side Schürzen armour skirts, and optional machine-gun shields for close defence. The StuG III Ausf. G with Zimmerit played a crucial role in the brutal urban and street fighting at Arnhem, where its low silhouette, heavy gun, and strong armour made it a formidable ambush weapon against Allied armour and infantry.
