The Panzer III Ausf. M (produced from late 1942 into 1943) was the penultimate mass-production Panzer III and typically carried the long-barrel 5 cm KwK 39 L/60, which improved anti-armor performance over earlier short-barrel guns but was already being challenged by newer Allied tanks. 
 
The M introduced several production and reliability refinements — improved waterproofing and deep-fording adaptations, revised exhaust/engine-deck fittings, and turret-mounted smoke dischargers — and some hulls later received Schürzen skirts; nevertheless, increasing enemy armour and the arrival of more powerful German guns shifted the Panzer III away from a frontline tank-killer role toward reconnaissance, infantry-support tasks, conversions (including flame-tanks and StuG bases), and second-line duties.
