The Panzer IV Ausf. C was an early-production infantry-support variant built between October 1938 and August 1939 (about 140 vehicles) and represented an incremental improvement over the original A/B chassis. It retained the short-barrel 7.5 cm KwK 37 L/24 howitzer-style gun intended for high-explosive support of infantry, received thicker turret armour (raised to ~30 mm) and other minor refinements that pushed its combat weight to roughly 18 tonnes; later hulls in the run also saw an improved HL120TRM engine installed. Designed and employed as a support tank rather than a dedicated tank-killer, Ausf. C vehicles took part in Germany’s early campaigns (Poland and France) and set the basic layout that would be progressively up-armoured and up-gunned in subsequent Panzer IV variants.
