The German Panzer II Ausf. F (DAK Configuration) was a modified version of the standard Ausf. F light tank, adapted for service with the Deutsches Afrikakorps during the North African Campaign between 1941–43. The Ausf. F was the last major production model of the Panzer II, featuring up to 35mm of frontal armour, a redesigned superstructure for better crew protection, and armed with a 20mm KwK 30 L/55 autocannon and a 7.92mm MG34 machine gun. For desert service, vehicles were fitted with sand filters, improved cooling systems, and storage racks for extra fuel and water, ensuring reliability in the harsh North African climate. The DAK versions were typically painted in tropical camouflage schemes, such as dark yellow or sand colours, and often carried external stowage for long-range operations. While fast and manoeuvrable, the Panzer II Ausf. F was already becoming obsolete as a frontline tank, being vulnerable to British and American armour; however, in North Africa it was still used effectively for reconnaissance, infantry support, and screening roles. The Ausf. F in DAK service symbolised the transition of the Panzer II from a frontline vehicle to a specialised support tank within German armoured divisions.
