The German Panzer II Ausf. L “Luchs” (meaning Lynx) was the final development of the Panzer II light tank line, designed specifically for reconnaissance. Introduced in 1942, the Luchs featured a new chassis with torsion bar suspension, widened tracks, and improved cross-country mobility, making it far more advanced than earlier Panzer II models. It was armed with a 20mm KwK 38 autocannon and a 7.92mm MG34 machine gun, effective against infantry and soft targets but inadequate against enemy tanks by the mid-war period. Armour protection was increased to 30mm on the front, offering decent defence for its reconnaissance role, while a crew of four operated the vehicle. Powered by the Maybach HL 66P engine, it could reach speeds of up to 60 km/h (37 mph), giving it excellent speed and agility. Only about 100 vehicles were built, due to production shifting toward heavier tanks like the Panther. The Luchs served on both the Eastern and Western Fronts, valued for its mobility and reliability, but its limited firepower restricted it to scouting and screening duties. It remains one of the most advanced German light tanks of the war.
