The Soviet BA-27 Armoured Car was the first series-produced armoured car of the Red Army, introduced in 1928 and based on the AMO-F-15 truck chassis, itself a copy of the Fiat F-15. It was armed with a 37mm Hotchkiss M1915 gun mounted in a fully traversing turret, supported by a 7.62mm Fedorov machine gun, giving it firepower comparable to contemporary light tanks. Armour protection ranged from 4mm to 7mm, providing basic defence against small arms fire. The BA-27 had a crew of four and could reach speeds of 48 km/h (30 mph) on roads, though its 4x2 chassis limited cross-country performance. Around 215 units were produced, and they served with the Red Army throughout the late 1920s and 1930s, seeing action in border clashes, internal security operations, and early mechanised manoeuvres. By the outbreak of World War II, the BA-27 was largely obsolete but some were still in service during the German invasion of 1941, where they were quickly lost. Despite its limitations, the BA-27 was a landmark in Soviet armoured development, paving the way for more advanced designs like the BA-6 and BA-10.
