The Soviet T-18M Light Tank was an upgraded version of the original T-18 (MS-1), the first series-produced Soviet tank, which had been introduced in the late 1920s. Modernised in the 1930s to extend its service life, the T-18M received improvements to its suspension and transmission, along with a more reliable engine, which enhanced its mobility compared to the original model. Armour protection remained light, around 16mm, suitable only against small arms fire and shrapnel, while armament typically consisted of a 37mm Hotchkiss gun supported by a 7.62mm DT machine gun. By the time of the German invasion in 1941, the T-18M was completely obsolete but was still used in secondary roles such as training, fortified positions, or last-ditch defensive actions. A small number were even dug in as fixed pillboxes during the desperate early months of the war. Though outdated, the T-18M symbolised the early development of Soviet armoured forces and served as a stepping stone toward more advanced designs like the BT series and eventually the T-34.
