The Japanese Type 1 47mm Anti-Tank Gun (Type 1 47mm Cannon) was developed in 1941 to address the growing inadequacy of earlier Japanese anti-tank weapons against more heavily armoured Allied vehicles. Designed as a more powerful successor to the Type 94 37mm gun, the Type 1 fired a 47mm armour-piercing round with significantly improved penetration, capable of defeating early-war Allied light and some medium tanks at typical combat ranges. The gun was relatively lightweight and could be moved by its crew or towed by light vehicles, making it suitable for infantry support and defensive positions.
The Type 1 saw service from 1942 onward, including in China, the Philippines, Okinawa, and other Pacific theatres. While it proved effective against lighter tanks such as the M3 Stuart, it struggled against later Allied armour like the M4 Sherman unless engaging from close range or favourable angles. Despite these limitations, the Type 1 47mm gun became Japan’s primary anti-tank artillery piece for the remainder of the war, representing a modest but important improvement in Japanese anti-armour capability.
