The Japanese Type 96 15cm Howitzer was a heavy field artillery piece introduced in 1936 to provide the Imperial Japanese Army with more modern and mobile long-range fire support. Designed as an improvement over earlier 150mm howitzers, it fired a powerful 149.1mm high-explosive shell capable of engaging fortified positions, troop concentrations, and artillery batteries at ranges of over 11 kilometres. The Type 96 featured a split-trail carriage, improved recoil system, and better elevation compared to older designs, giving it greater flexibility in both direct and indirect fire roles.
The Type 96 saw service from the late 1930s in China and later throughout the Pacific War, including in the Philippines and other island defences. While effective and relatively modern for its time, it was heavy and difficult to transport in jungle terrain, often requiring significant manpower or tractor support. Despite logistical challenges, the Type 96 15cm howitzer became one of Japan’s primary heavy artillery pieces, providing much-needed long-range firepower in both offensive and defensive operations.
