The Japanese Medium Mortar most commonly used during World War II was the Type 97 81mm Mortar, introduced in 1937 to provide Japanese infantry units with effective indirect fire support. Based loosely on the French Brandt mortar design, it fired an 81mm high-explosive shell capable of engaging enemy troops, machine-gun positions, and light fortifications at ranges of over 2,800 metres. The weapon consisted of a barrel, bipod, and baseplate, and was typically operated by a three- to five-man crew responsible for aiming, loading, and ammunition supply.

The Type 97 mortar was widely used in campaigns across China, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific islands, where it proved especially valuable in jungle warfare and defensive positions. Mortar teams could quickly set up behind cover and deliver high-angle fire onto enemy positions that were difficult to reach with direct-fire weapons. Although Japanese mortar units often faced shortages of ammunition later in the war, the Type 97 remained one of the most important support weapons available to Japanese infantry formations.
