The German Volkssturm Sniper was an improvised marksman role that emerged during the final months of 1944–45, as Germany hastily mobilised its last reserves to defend against advancing Allied forces. Drawn from older men, youths, and civilians with limited training, Volkssturm snipers were typically individuals who already possessed hunting experience or had prior military service. Armed with whatever weapons were available—often Kar98k rifles fitted with scavenged or outdated scopes, captured rifles, or even civilian hunting guns—they were deployed in urban strongpoints, ruined buildings, attics, and rubble positions to delay enemy troops and disrupt infantry movement.

Though lacking the specialised training of Wehrmacht or SS sharpshooters, Volkssturm snipers could still be effective in close-range urban fighting, especially when using concealed firing positions and local knowledge of city layouts. Their role was primarily defensive: harassing enemy patrols, covering barricades, and attempting to slow Soviet and Allied advances in cities like Berlin. However, shortages of ammunition, poor coordination, and minimal training severely limited their overall impact. The presence of Volkssturm snipers underscored the desperate, improvised nature of Germany’s final defence in the closing days of World War II.
