The Australian Anti-Tank Rifle Team was an early-war infantry unit equipped with weapons such as the Boys .55-inch anti-tank rifle, used to give infantry some capability against enemy armour. Typically operated by a two-man team—a gunner and a loader—the weapon could fire armour-piercing rounds capable of penetrating lightly armoured vehicles, armoured cars, and tank weak points at short range. In addition to anti-tank use, it could also be employed against machine-gun nests, light fortifications, and soft-skinned vehicles.
Australian forces used anti-tank rifle teams in the North African campaign and early fighting in the Pacific, where they were one of the few portable anti-armour weapons available. However, as enemy tanks became more heavily armoured, the effectiveness of anti-tank rifles declined rapidly. By 1942–43, these teams were largely replaced by more powerful weapons such as the 6-pounder anti-tank gun and infantry anti-tank devices. Despite becoming obsolete, AT rifle teams played an important role in the early stages of the war, providing infantry with a vital—if limited—means of engaging enemy armour.
