The German Panzerbefehlswagen III Ausf. E was an early command-tank variant of the Panzer III series, introduced around 1939–1940 to provide mobile battlefield coordination for Panzer units during the Blitzkrieg campaigns. Based on the Panzer III Ausf. E chassis, it featured improved torsion-bar suspension, enhanced armour up to 30mm, and the reliable Maybach HL 120 TR engine. To accommodate extra radio equipment—typically the FuG 6 and long-range FuG 8 sets—the main 3.7cm gun was removed and replaced with a dummy gun or, in some vehicles, a single MG34 for basic self-defence. Internally, map tables and expanded communications gear allowed the tank commander to direct armoured formations in fast-moving operations. The Panzerbefehlswagen III Ausf. E served in the invasion of Poland, the Battle of France, and the early stages of Operation Barbarossa, where its improved mobility and communication capabilities made it a key asset in coordinating German armoured breakthroughs.
