The Churchill NA75 Mk. IV (A.22 Infantry Tank) was a field-modified variant of the British Churchill developed in North Africa in 1943 to improve its firepower against German armour and anti-tank guns. The designation “NA75” referred to “North Africa 75,” as workshops fitted the Churchill Mk. IV with the 75mm gun and mantlet from damaged American M4 Sherman tanks, replacing the original 6-pounder. This conversion allowed the Churchill to fire effective high-explosive rounds in addition to armour-piercing ammunition, greatly improving its versatility in infantry-support roles.

Retaining the Churchill’s heavy armour—up to 102mm on the front—and excellent climbing ability, the NA75 combined strong protection with improved offensive capability. It saw service in the later stages of the North African campaign and subsequently in Italy, where its ability to tackle rough terrain and fortified positions proved invaluable. Though only produced in limited numbers as a field adaptation rather than a factory model, the Churchill NA75 Mk. IV represents a practical and effective battlefield modification that significantly enhanced the Churchill’s combat performance.
