The USA M7 Priest (Mid War Variant) was a refined version of the original self-propelled gun, continuing to provide highly mobile artillery support for U.S. and Allied forces. Introduced in 1943, it retained the 105mm M2A1 howitzer in an open-topped fighting compartment on the M3 Lee chassis but incorporated improvements such as increased ammunition storage, better crew ergonomics, and minor armour layout changes while keeping protection up to 51mm. Powered by the Continental R975 radial engine, it maintained a top speed of 38 km/h (24 mph) and excellent cross-country mobility, allowing it to keep pace with advancing armour. The Mid War Priest saw heavy use in Italy, North-West Europe, and the Pacific, where its rapid deployment and sustained firepower made it a key asset in combined arms operations. It was widely supplied to Allied nations under Lend-Lease, cementing its role as one of the most important self-propelled guns of the war.
