The USA M7 Priest (Late War Variant) was the final wartime development of the Priest self-propelled gun, serving as the backbone of Allied mobile artillery in 1944–45. Built on the improved M4 Sherman chassis rather than the earlier M3 Lee, it retained the 105mm M2A1 howitzer in an open-topped fighting compartment but featured enhanced armour protection—still up to 51mm—and a revised internal layout for better crew efficiency and ammunition handling. Powered by the Continental R975 radial engine, it maintained a top speed of 38 km/h (24 mph) with reliable cross-country performance. The Late War Priest saw extensive action in Normandy, the Battle of the Bulge, and the final push into Germany, where its mobility allowed artillery to keep up with fast-moving armoured spearheads. Widely used by U.S., British, and Commonwealth forces, it proved to be one of the most successful and enduring self-propelled guns of the war, remaining in service with some nations for years after 1945.
