The Panzer IV Ausf. J with Schürzen was the final variant of Germany’s versatile Panzer IV medium tank, produced in the later stages of World War II. The Ausf. J version featured simplified design elements to speed up production, such as the removal of the electric turret traverse, making it a manually operated turret. Schürzen, or armored skirts, were added to the sides of the hull and turret to protect against anti-tank rifles and shaped charges. Armed with the reliable 75mm KwK 40 L/48 gun, the Panzer IV Ausf. J remained effective against Allied armor, though it was increasingly outclassed by heavier Allied tanks. Despite its limitations, the Panzer IV Ausf. J with Schürzen continued to serve on both the Eastern and Western Fronts, where its rugged design and firepower still made it a valuable asset in the German army’s armored forces.
