The German Flakpanzer IV (3.7cm Flak 43) “Möbelwagen” was a self-propelled anti-aircraft gun developed in 1943–44, based on the proven Panzer IV chassis. Nicknamed “Möbelwagen” (meaning furniture van) due to its tall, boxy, folding-armour sides, it was designed as an interim solution to provide mobile air defence for panzer divisions against the growing threat of Allied fighter-bombers. Armed with a single 3.7cm FlaK 43 autocannon, the vehicle could deliver a high rate of fire against low-flying aircraft and was also effective against lightly armoured ground targets. Armour protection was modest, with 10–25mm plates mainly to shield the crew, who remained exposed when firing. The sides could be folded down to allow a full 360° field of fire. Powered by the Maybach HL 120 TRM engine, the Möbelwagen maintained the mobility of the Panzer IV, making it suitable for frontline use. Though effective, its open design left the crew vulnerable, and it was gradually replaced by better-protected vehicles such as the Wirbelwind and Ostwind. Still, around 240 units were built, and they served from 1944 to 1945, providing much-needed air defence during the later stages of the war.
