The German 20mm FlaK 30 was one of the Wehrmacht’s primary light anti-aircraft guns during the early and mid-years of World War II. Introduced in 1934, it was designed to engage low-flying aircraft but proved equally effective in a ground-support role against infantry, soft vehicles, and lightly armoured targets. The FlaK 30 fired 20×138mmB rounds at a practical rate of about 120 rounds per minute, with an effective slant range of roughly 2,200 meters. Lightweight at around 450 kg, it could be quickly repositioned by its crew and was easily towed behind trucks or half-tracks, making it highly mobile for fast-moving operations.
Used extensively in Poland, France, North Africa, and on the Eastern Front, the FlaK 30 often appeared mounted on trucks, Sd.Kfz. 10 half-tracks, and fixed defensive positions. Though eventually overshadowed by the faster-firing FlaK 38, the 20mm FlaK 30 remained in service throughout the war due to its reliability and versatility, providing vital air-defence and close fire support wherever German forces operated.
