The Panzer 38(t) was a Czech-designed light tank, originally developed as the LT vz. 38, and adopted by Germany after the annexation of Czechoslovakia in 1939. Renowned for its reliability, ease of maintenance, and good cross-country mobility, it became a valuable addition to the German armored forces during the early stages of World War II. Armed with a 37mm KwK 38(t) gun and equipped with up to 25mm of armor, the Panzer 38(t) was effective against early Allied and Soviet tanks.
It saw combat in the invasions of Poland and France, and played a significant role during Operation Barbarossa in 1941. However, by 1942, it was becoming outclassed by better-armored and more heavily armed enemy tanks, such as the Soviet T-34. Though phased out as a frontline tank, the chassis remained in use throughout the war in roles such as tank destroyers (e.g., Marder III) and assault guns, most notably the Jagdpanzer 38(t) Hetzer, extending the design’s usefulness well beyond its original purpose.
