The German Sturmtiger was a heavy assault gun developed during World War II to destroy fortified positions and strongpoints in urban combat. Built on the chassis of the Tiger I heavy tank, the Sturmtiger was armed with an enormous 380mm Raketenwerfer 61 L/5.4 rocket-propelled mortar, originally a naval depth charge launcher adapted for land use. Each rocket weighed around 350 kg (770 lbs) and could level buildings or penetrate bunkers with devastating explosive power. The vehicle had 150mm to 180mm of armor, making it extremely well-protected against most anti-tank weapons of the time. Introduced in 1944, the Sturmtiger was intended for close support in urban environments, such as in the battles for Warsaw and during the defense of the Reich, including the Battle of the Bulge. However, only 18 units were built due to its complexity and limited strategic need. While its firepower was unmatched for a land vehicle, the Sturmtiger was slow, cumbersome, and had limited ammunition—carrying only 14 rounds. Despite its low production and niche role, it remains one of the most distinctive and powerful assault vehicles of the war.
