The Japanese Tankette Type 92 Jyu-Sokosha (Early) was a light, fast reconnaissance and cavalry support vehicle developed in the early 1930s by the Imperial Japanese Army. Designed for mobility rather than armor or firepower, the early version was equipped with a 6.5mm Type 91 machine gun in a small rotating turret and featured thin armor, ranging from 6mm to 12mm, just enough to protect against small arms fire. Built on a modified tracked chassis, it had excellent cross-country mobility, making it suitable for scouting, infantry support, and internal security roles. The Type 92 was primarily used during the invasion of Manchuria, in border skirmishes with China, and during the early stages of the Second Sino-Japanese War, where it proved useful against poorly equipped opponents. However, its light armor and weak armament quickly became a liability as enemy weapons improved. Despite this, the Type 92 marked an important step in Japan’s early mechanized warfare efforts and laid the groundwork for future tankette and light tank development.
