The Japanese Type 92 Battalion Gun (70mm Cannon) was a lightweight infantry support weapon introduced in 1932 and widely used by the Imperial Japanese Army throughout World War II. Designed to provide direct fire support at the battalion level, the Type 92 fired a 70mm high-explosive shell effective against enemy infantry, machine-gun nests, and light fortifications. Compact and relatively light—around 216 kg—it could be broken down for transport by pack animals or moved by its crew, making it well suited for operations in rugged terrain such as China, Burma, and the Pacific islands.
Although not intended as a dedicated anti-tank weapon, the Type 92 could fire armour-piercing rounds capable of defeating lightly armoured vehicles at close range. Its low muzzle velocity allowed for high-angle fire, giving it versatility similar to a mortar in jungle or mountainous conditions. The Type 92 became a staple of Japanese infantry formations and was valued for its portability and reliability, playing a key role in providing organic artillery support to frontline units throughout the war.
