The Japanese Tankette Type 92 Jyu-Sokosha (Late) was an improved version of Japan’s early cavalry reconnaissance vehicle, featuring refinements in both protection and mechanical reliability. Introduced in the mid-1930s, the late variant retained the compact tracked chassis and small size ideal for scouting roles but received slightly enhanced armor (up to 12mm) and was typically armed with a more effective 7.7mm Type 97 machine gun in place of the earlier 6.5mm model. These upgrades were intended to improve its survivability and firepower against better-armed Chinese and Soviet forces. The late version also addressed mechanical issues found in early models, improving suspension and engine performance for greater reliability in rough terrain. It was used extensively in the Second Sino-Japanese War and in border conflicts such as the Battles of Khalkhin Gol against the Soviet Union, where it began to show its limitations against more heavily armed and armored opponents. By the late 1930s, the Type 92 was becoming obsolete, but it continued to serve in secondary roles and training units, marking an important phase in the evolution of Japanese armored doctrine.
