The Japanese Rifle Squad during World War II was the basic infantry fighting unit of the Imperial Japanese Army, typically consisting of 12–15 soldiers led by a corporal or sergeant. The squad was built around the Type 99 Light Machine Gun, which served as the unit’s primary source of firepower and was supported by an assistant gunner and ammunition carriers. The remaining soldiers were usually armed with Arisaka rifles, most commonly the Type 38 or Type 99, along with bayonets and grenades. This structure allowed the squad to combine sustained automatic fire with riflemen capable of manoeuvre and close combat.

Japanese rifle squads were trained to operate aggressively, often using stealth, infiltration, and close-quarters combat to overcome enemy positions. In difficult terrain such as jungles and mountainous regions, squads relied heavily on coordination with grenade dischargers (“knee mortars”) and light machine guns to suppress enemy forces before advancing. While well adapted to rugged terrain and night fighting, Japanese rifle squads later struggled against heavily armed Allied units supported by tanks, artillery, and air power, particularly during the later stages of the Pacific War (1943–45).
