The Japanese Kurogane Type 95 Scout Car was a compact light reconnaissance vehicle developed in the mid-1930s for use by the Imperial Japanese Army. Officially designated the Type 95, it was one of the first mass-produced four-wheel-drive military passenger cars in the world. Lightweight and highly manoeuvrable, the Kurogane was powered by a small air-cooled V-twin engine, giving it reliable performance in harsh climates ranging from the cold of Manchuria to the jungles of Southeast Asia. Its simple design, high ground clearance, and durable suspension made it well suited for rough terrain and long-distance reconnaissance duties.

Used extensively in China, Manchuria, and throughout the Pacific theatre, the Kurogane served as a liaison vehicle, scout car, and light transport for officers and small patrol teams. Although lightly built and unarmoured, it proved dependable and adaptable in remote conditions where larger vehicles struggled. Production continued until the later stages of the war, and despite limited numbers compared to Allied vehicles like the Jeep, the Kurogane became the backbone of Japanese light motorised reconnaissance and command transport during World War II.
