USA - USMC Flamethrower Teams (2)

The USMC Flamethrower Teams were specialised assault units used extensively by the U.S. Marine Corps during the Pacific War, where Japanese forces often fought from bunkers, caves, and heavily fortified positions. Typically organised as two- or three-man teams, they operated weapons such as the M1A1 and later M2 flamethrower, which projected a stream of burning fuel capable of clearing enemy strongpoints at close range. One Marine carried and fired the flamethrower, while the others provided protection with rifles, carbines, or submachine guns, as the operator was vulnerable while using the weapon.
Flamethrower teams were especially important in battles such as Tarawa, Saipan, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa, where standard infantry weapons often struggled to neutralise deeply dug-in defenders. The intense heat and smoke of the flamethrower made it one of the most effective tools for clearing caves, trenches, and pillboxes, though its short range meant the teams had to operate very close to the enemy. Because of the danger and weight of the equipment, flamethrower teams usually worked closely with engineers, rifle squads, and tanks, forming part of coordinated assault groups during difficult attacks.
