The German Sd.Kfz. 234/4 “Pak-Wagen” (Gerät 96) was the final—and most heavily armed—variant of the Sd.Kfz. 234 armoured car series, developed in late 1944 to give reconnaissance units a potent mobile anti-tank capability. Built on the high-performance 8×8 chassis, the 234/4 mounted the powerful 7.5cm PaK 40 anti-tank gun in an open-topped fighting compartment, with minimal shielding to save weight. This gave the vehicle the ability to destroy most Allied medium tanks at combat ranges, effectively turning a fast reconnaissance platform into a formidable tank hunter. Armour remained light, between 8–30mm, meaning the Pak-Wagen relied heavily on speed, careful positioning, and ambush tactics rather than direct engagement.
Fielded in small numbers on both the Eastern and Western Fronts, the Sd.Kfz. 234/4 often operated at the spearhead or flanks of Panzer formations, using its speed to redeploy quickly and strike where least expected. The dual-driver system allowed rapid direction changes—crucial for retreating after firing—and the crew of four carried only limited PaK 40 ammunition due to space constraints. Though produced in modest quantities due to Germany’s worsening industrial situation, the Pak-Wagen proved highly effective when used correctly, and it stands as one of the most distinctive late-war German armoured fighting vehicles.
