The Matilda CDL (Canal Defence Light) was a specialised British armoured vehicle developed in secrecy during World War II, designed to use powerful searchlights to disorient and suppress enemy forces during night operations. Based on the sturdy Matilda II infantry tank chassis, the standard turret was replaced with a large armoured housing containing an intense carbon-arc searchlight capable of projecting a brilliant, focused beam over long distances. The light could be shuttered rapidly to create a flickering effect, intended to confuse enemy troops and mask advancing Allied units. Despite the name “Canal Defence Light,” the title was deliberately misleading to maintain secrecy about its true purpose.
Developed from 1940 onward, CDL-equipped Matildas were deployed in limited numbers, with some later conversions made on the Grant tank chassis. Although widely prepared for use, the Matilda CDL saw relatively little combat action, with its most notable operational use occurring during the Rhine crossing in 1945. Concerns over secrecy, coordination, and tactical employment limited its impact. Nevertheless, the Matilda CDL represents one of the war’s more unusual and innovative armoured adaptations, reflecting Allied experimentation with psychological and night warfare technologies.
