The Italian Carro Armato Leggero L6/40 (Flamethrower Version) was a specialised variant of Italy’s light tank developed during 1942–43 for close-support and assault roles. Based on the standard L6/40 chassis, the flamethrower model replaced the turret armament—normally a 20mm Breda cannon—with a flamethrower projector, while fuel for the weapon was carried in internal tanks or in a small armoured trailer to extend operating range. The vehicle retained its compact size, light armour (up to 30mm on the front), and good mobility thanks to its SPA 18D petrol engine, making it suitable for supporting infantry in confined or fortified terrain.
Designed for clearing bunkers, trenches, and fortified positions, the L6/40 flamethrower variant saw limited use, mainly in North Africa and later in defensive operations following the Italian armistice in 1943. Like many Italian light tanks of the period, it was lightly protected and vulnerable to anti-tank weapons, limiting its effectiveness in direct combat. Nevertheless, it represented Italy’s effort to adapt existing armoured platforms for specialised assault roles, reflecting broader wartime experimentation with flamethrower-equipped vehicles for close-quarters battlefield operations.
