The Italian Autocannone da 90/53 su Lancia 3Ro was a powerful self-propelled anti-tank and anti-aircraft gun developed in 1941–42 to give Italian forces mobile heavy firepower. It mounted the formidable 90mm Cannone da 90/53—one of the most effective anti-tank guns fielded by Italy—on the chassis of the robust Lancia 3Ro 6×4 truck. The 90/53 gun offered excellent muzzle velocity and penetration, capable of engaging Allied tanks at long range, including heavily armoured vehicles in North Africa. The truck’s open mounting allowed wide traverse and elevation, making it suitable for both anti-aircraft and anti-armour roles, though crew protection was minimal.

The Autocannone saw service primarily in North Africa during 1942–43, where its long-range firepower proved highly respected by both Axis and Allied troops. However, the vehicle’s high silhouette and lack of armour made it vulnerable to artillery and counterfire, and it required careful positioning to be effective. Only a limited number were produced, and after Italy’s armistice in September 1943, some surviving vehicles were taken over by German forces. Despite its small production run, the Autocannone da 90/53 su Lancia 3Ro remains one of Italy’s most impressive wartime improvisations, combining mobility with heavy firepower in a flexible battlefield platform.
