The Sherman V “Tulip” was a British field-modified version of the M4A4 Sherman, equipped with rocket launchers mounted on either side of the turret. These launchers typically carried 60-pound RP-3 air-to-ground rockets, the same type used by RAF aircraft, and were intended to deliver devastating short-range firepower against bunkers, fortifications, and enemy troops.
Used most notably by the British 1st Coldstream Guards during the Rhine crossings in 1945, the Sherman Tulip combined the reliable firepower of the Sherman’s 75mm gun with the psychological and destructive impact of heavy rockets. Though a rare and improvised adaptation, it reflected the British Army’s innovation in maximizing the Sherman’s battlefield versatility late in the war.
